The annual George Street Mardi Gras has historically been a popular event with the citizens of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Evoking the same fun spirit as the infamous New Orleans Mardi Gras, George Street’s event happens yearly around Halloween, transforming the entire street into the largest costume party in the country.

Live entertainment is, of course, one of the main components of the George Street Mardi Gras. Recent acts have included ShanneyganockBig Sugar, Honeymoon Suite, The Shining Wizards, Scientists of Sound and more, as well as favourite local acts and popular tribute bands. Ticket price includes entry to all 23 bars on George Street.

A major highlight of each Mardi Gras is the Bud Light Costume Boonanza. The best costumes of the night are judged onstage and the winners can walk away with big prizes. Last year’s Bud Light Costume Boonanza included $10,000 in prize money ($5000 for 1st place). Entry details are posted prior to the event and all Mardi Gras attendees are invited to enter (must be 19+).

2015 George Street Mardi Gras FAQ

How does the judging work?

Each contestant must be evaluated by our panel of three (3) judges. As you register, you will be asked for your name and cell number. The judges will rate the top five (5) costumes who will then advance to the final crowd judging stage. The final winner will be determined by a process of elimination based on crowd applause.
Where and when can contestants be judged?
Judging will occur between 8:30pm and 11:30pm at the tented area in front of DUSK Ultra Club (across from O’Reilly’s Irish Newfoundland Pub).
What are the Bud Light BOOnanza prizes?
There is a total of $10,000 to be awarded, based on the following breakdown:
1st Place.  $5,000
2nd Place. $2,500
3rd Place.  $1,500
4th Place.  $750
5th Place.  $250
What criteria do judges use to evaluate costumes?
20% ORIGINALITY
20% CREATIVITY
20% DETAIL
20% EFFORT
20% OVERALL IMPRESSION / WOW! FACTOR
How will the final contestants be contacted?
Each contestant that qualifies for staging judging will be contacted via text message at approximately 11:30pm.
Are there any limitations to our costumes?
Contestants that qualify as groups will be restricted to a maximum of four people permitted on stage for final judging. Costumes over seven (7) feet in height will find it difficult to access the stage. The GSA reserves the right to remove any mask at any time to confirm the age of majority of the patron.
